Body Positivity

Have you heard about the “curvy wife” guy? A few days ago, Robbie Tripp posted a photo on Instagram of himself gazing into his wife’s eyes. The reader learns her name is Sarah and not just “his curvy wife” by the end of his lengthy post that details how “brave” he is for loving an average sized American woman.

“I love this woman and her curvy body. As a teenager, I was often teased by my friends for my attraction to girls on the thicker side, ones who were shorter and curvier, girls that the average (basic) bro might refer to as “chubby” or even “fat.” Then, as I became a man and started to educate myself on issues such as feminism and how the media marginalizes women by portraying a very narrow and very specific standard of beauty (thin, tall, lean) I realized how many men have bought into that lie. For me, there is nothing sexier than this woman right here: thick thighs, big booty, cute little side roll, etc. Her shape and size won’t be the one featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan but it’s the one featured in my life and in my heart. There’s nothing sexier to me than a woman who is both curvy and confident; this gorgeous girl I married fills out every inch of her jeans and is still the most beautiful one in the room. Guys, rethink what society has told you that you should desire. A real woman is not a porn star or a bikini mannequin or a movie character. She’s real. She has beautiful stretch marks on her hips and cute little dimples on her booty. Girls, don’t ever fool yourself by thinking you have to fit a certain mold to be loved and appreciated. There is a guy out there who is going to celebrate you for exactly who you are, someone who will love you like I love my Sarah.”

When Robbie writes that there is “nothing sexier than this woman right here: thick thighs, big booty, …” he is still objectifying her body. It’s wonderful that he loves his wife’s body, but he misses the mark with his encouragement to girls. While it is true that girls do not have to fit a certain PHYSICAL mold to be loved and appreciated, they NEVER need to fit a mold of any kind to deserve love or feel validated. He writes about what real women look like, but real love has nothing to do with how attractive you are to someone else. Love is unconditional. Body positivity is personal.

Body positivity is not found in the eyes of your lover, your family, or your friends. These are the people who love you for you. They may encourage you to lead a healthy lifestyle because they love you and want you to stick around for a while. They may be more attracted to you in different physical states, but attraction and love are not one and the same. Whatever your shape, whatever your size, whatever your physical ability, you are valuable and deserving of love. Before letting anyone tell you that there “might” be a guy out there who will love you, you need to believe that YOU can love you. When you love yourself, you are never pushing yourself to achieve a body type to please someone else. When you love yourself, you take better care of your body. Staying healthy is not equivalent to staying in size four jeans or having a hip to waist ratio that makes your boyfriend happy. You can exercise and eat well because you want to nourish your body’s nutritional and physical needs. You can take care of yourself without hating yourself.

At Repke Fitness, we want you to feel empowered. We want to help you discover how strong you are from the inside out. You don’t have to be a size 4 or bootylicious to deserve love. The motivation to eat well and exercise should be the ultimate display of self-love. You’re not working out to keep your spouse happy, but maybe to live a longer life with him. You’re not working on sculpted glutes for anyone else’s benefit, but loving the way you feel in your own jeans is your incentive: not how someone sees you in them.
