At Repke Fitness, we believe age should never hold you back from becoming stronger, healthier, and more mobile. Our team currently works with over ten clients aged 78 and older, including our most senior client, Jack, who is 90 years old and still incredibly active. Whether your goal is to reduce pain, build strength, prevent falls, or stay independent, we tailor each fitness program to meet your unique needs and abilities.
Importance of a Personal Trainer for Seniors
Many seniors hesitate to start a fitness program due to concerns about injury, mobility limitations, or simply feeling like it’s too late to begin. However, research shows that strength training can significantly improve balance, mobility, and cognitive function in older adults (FamilyDoctor.org). Engaging in a structured fitness program, especially with a certified senior personal trainer, can make a huge difference in overall quality of life. Personal training for seniors is such a crucial because building muscle, staying strong and mobile is essential especially as we age. Our team of trainers at Repke Fitness have experience working with clients all across the age spectrum and we can help you or your loved one stay active, mobile in safe in their fitness journey.
We design programs tailored to the unique challenges and needs of seniors. Here are some of the most common reasons and benefits our senior clients start personal training with us:
- Improving balance and fall prevention (CDC on Fall Prevention)
- Building strength to stay independent (Trafft: Personal Training for Seniors)
- Reducing joint pain and stiffness
- Enhancing cardiovascular health and endurance
- Boosting confidence in daily movements
Current clients we have right row: For example, Rich, 79 years old, we’ve been working on static balance and posture. He’s fairly tall and has a kyphotic posture so we’ve been working a lot on thoracic mobility, strengthening his mid and upper back and scapula stabilization. Miriam, 83, who’s very active. We’ve been putting a lot of emphasis on balance, core strength and now she can hold a plank for over a minute. We have some very impressive senior citizens, geriatric and older clients who are demonstrating that strength and endurance can improve at any age. Such as Jack, who’s 90, although he uses a cane, he’s been training with us for a while now and used to love doing the row machine when he was younger. He has now build up the strength again and during his sessions with us at Repke Fitness is actively uses the row machine, and battle ropes. We treat every client differently based on how they present and what they’re capable. It’s why we start out with an assessment and start everyone slowly. We normally start with basic things like sit to stand, static balance, seated rows for posture, core strength, dead bugs, clams, glute bridges etc before we progress to other things. We meet each client where they are in their fitness journey, we train the client NOT their age because we have some clients in their 70s who can do more than some of our 40 or 50 year olds, so we begin all clients with an initial session where we assess their abilities. Our team of trainers also makes exercise fun and engaging, not your typical gym trainer who’s leaning on equipment or scrolling on their phones during your entire session. We give you the attention that you need.
Key Areas We Focus on for Senior Fitness
🦵 Balance & Fall Prevention
Falls are one of the biggest risks for seniors, often leading to fractures, hospitalizations, and loss of independence. According to the CDC, one in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year (CDC Fall Statistics). That’s why our training includes:
- Strengthening stabilizing muscles to improve posture and control
- Reaction time drills to help prevent sudden falls
- Controlled movement training to reduce risks
For those who need it, we also practice how to fall safely and recover properly, minimizing injury in case a fall does occur.
🏋️ Core Strength & Stability
A strong core is the foundation of movement, balance, and posture. Weak core muscles can contribute to back pain, difficulty standing up, and instability. At our fitness facility, we use targeted exercises such as:
- Seated and standing core work (both rotation and anti rotation exercises.
- Light resistance exercises to improve midsection strength
- Functional training to make everyday movements easier
- Farmers’ carry, wood chops, Bridges, banded or cable palloff press and many other exercises because we understand the importance of core strength as you age.
🧘 Flexibility & Mobility For Senior Citizens
As we age, our range of motion naturally declines, mainly because we don’t work on it or prioritize it which makes movements stiffer and more difficult. We combat this by integrating:
- Safe and effective stretching routines
- Dynamic warm-ups before workouts
- Static stretching after proper warm-up
- Functional mobility drills that keep joints moving freely
🛑 Getting Up & Down from the Floor
Many seniors fear falling because they worry they won’t be able to get back up. We specifically train controlled movements to make getting up and down from the floor easier, improving both confidence and independence. We actually have a client who happened to fall at home AFTER she started training with us. Marcia, was so pleased and happy that she was able to get up by herself after falling because he had been practicing how to get up from the floor at Repke Fitness. By the way, Marcia is 86 years old and is active and independent which is one
🧠 Memory & Cognitive Exercises
Studies show that exercise is closely linked to better brain function and memory retention (Harvard Health). Our training includes:
- Memory challenges and focus drills
- Coordination exercises
- Dual-task exercises that engage both mind and body
Each workout is customized to ensure safe, effective, and confidence-boosting results.

Common Concerns About Exercise & Personal Trainer for Seniors
❓ “I have arthritis. Won’t exercise make my pain worse?”
💡 No! Proper movement reduces joint pain by strengthening the muscles around your joints for better support (Arthritis Foundation). Also, our trainers are gentle and meet you where you are in your fitness journey. So bad knees, arthritis, bad back, bad shoulders, stiff hips, we know how to work with and around all those.
❓ “I’m afraid of falling during exercise.”
💡 That’s why we focus on balance and controlled movements first, ensuring safety at all times. We stay close to you and for some clients we even use a gait belt because it’s necessary.
❓ “I haven’t worked out in years. Will it be too hard?”
💡 Not at all! We tailor workouts to meet you where you are and modify exercises to fit your abilities. Our oldest client is 90 years old and we have clients who are wheelchair bound, even have worked with clients who have prosthetic leg(s). We accommodate and meet you where you are in your fitness journey.
❓ “I don’t want to lift heavy weights.”
💡 You don’t have to! We use bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, and light weights to keep workouts safe and effective. We are NOT a gym and definitely will not force heavy weights on you, we are a private personal training studio that caters to your needs. However, strength training is important and lifting weight has great benefits like increasing bone density which helps battle osteoporosis and low bone mass.
