As you prepare for your Thanksgiving holiday and all the food that comes with it, it can be quite tempting to put your workout for the day on the back burner.
Between traveling, work, cooking, and shopping, I understand your time can be pretty limited and working out is the last thing on your mind. However, show your body and mind some love and put aside 20 minutes to get a workout in. That’s right, just 20 minutes is all you’ll need to get moving before your thanksgiving feast!
With high-intensity interval training (HIIT) you’ll be able to get in a challenging work out in just 20 minutes. You might be wondering what HIIT means, so let’s take a look. According to PubMed Central, HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise alternated with low-intensity recovery periods and has many benefits.
A couple of these benefits include:
- Burning a lot of calories in a short period of time
- Increased metabolic rate hours after exercise
According to Eric Salvador, NASM, NSCA, head instructor at The Fhitting Room in NYC, in an article with Daily Burn, “A high-intensity workout increases the body’s need for oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery.”
“This afterburn effect is referred to as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) and is the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts,” Salvador says in the article.
Sounds great, right!? But what if you’re stuck at home and don’t have any exercise equipment? No need to worry, we’ve got you covered!
