Vintage Video Workout
People over a certain age probably remember working out to video tapes. Denise Austin and Kathy Smith were household names as women laced their LA Gears below a thick pair of legwarmers. Men’s fashions were simpler with short little shorts and those striped tube socks. People under a certain age can look to the Internet for a glimpse of how their moms and dads stayed fit back in the day. Let’s take a look at some of the best vintage video workouts that you can revisit anytime for a fun and sometimes silly retro routine.
Nothing says comfort like a thonged leotard. Nothing says stylish like a paint splatter pattern and headwarmer. “https://www.pinterest.com/pin/365987907201440247/”

Let’s set the scene with a look back to Olivia Newton John’s video for her 1981 hit, Let’s Get Physical. With amazing transformations, colorful 80s fashions, and lyrics that suggest they’re not pumping iron at all, this video was released when gyms were beginning to rise in popularity, starting with the first of the big chain gyms like Gold’s and LA Fitness.

For those who are nostalgic for nostalgia, Richard Simmons’ Sweatin’ To The Oldies is for you. With Richard’s playful personality and shorts that resemble a popcorn bucket, your abs will burn from twisting the night away or from gut-busting laughter.

Before Tamilee Webb came on the scene to update Buns of Steel in the 90s, Greg Smithey guided the leotard clad gang in the original. Here is the full workout. I challenge you to do this 40 minute routine at home and let the trainers at Repke Fitness know how it went. As silly as it looks to the modern eye, this routine really burns those glutes!

If you’re ready to “put your mind to it, go for it, get down, and break a sweat,” then you’re ready for this Jesse and the Sundaes routine from Saved by the Bell. 80s kids will get a kick out of seeing Jesse Spano, Kelly Kapowski, and Lisa Turtle break a sweat in the brightest of leotards, accessorized with big, permed hair in scrunchies.

The OG Video Fitness guru is Jane Fonda who introduced her self-titled video, which according to her website, was the best-selling home video of all time. How effective was her routine? Thirty five years later, Jane is still looking fabulous at 77 so I’d say this classic is worth trying.
My personal favorite workout video as a teenager was Cindy Crawford’s Shape Your Body. With rad tunes from artists like Seal and a routine led by one of the world’s top supermodels, this workout is the ultimate representation of fitness in the 90s. See the whole thing here:
