Image result for measurable goals

Every year people commit to new goals, to being healthier, to start going to the gym, however, they don’t know where to start and many end up quitting.

In fact, according to U.S. News & Report, about 80 percent of people fail to reach their New Year’s resolutions.

The idea of setting new goals is great but the important thing is having the tools in place in order to accomplish those goals.

So, how do you set yourself up for success and not become part of that 80 percent who fail to reach their resolutions? Check out the 5 tips below!

Specific

When setting a goal, be specific about what you want to accomplish. Make it clear and precise in order to focus all of your energy on exactly what it is you’re trying to accomplish. A good piece of advice is to answer the “W” questions.

  • Who is involved?
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • Where is it located?
  • When will the goal be accomplished? (time frame)
  • Why is this goal important to you?

Measurable

Having measurable goals and tracking your progress is important in order to help you stay consistent and to make sure you’re on the correct path to meet your goals. What metrics will you use and how will you measure your goal(s)? For instance, if weight loss/body composition is a goal of yours, this can be measured in many different ways. Obviously, your weight on the scale is important, but you can measure this goal through pictures and how your clothes fit as well.

Attainable

Making sure you set a goal that is attainable is paramount to your success. For instance, setting a goal to run a marathon and only having 1 month to prepare isn’t achievable and will set you up for failure and likely you losing all your motivation to continue.

Relevant

Is this goal important to you? Does it make sense during this period of your life? Trying to attain a goal that truly doesn’t matter to you, yet you continue to chase it due to other people is likely setting yourself up for failure. Set goals that matter to YOU!

Time

One week? Six weeks? Six months? Every goal you set should have a target date in order to ensure you’re working towards a deadline. This not only gives you a sense of urgency but also allows you to make sure you’re taking the necessary steps along the way in order to meet your goals in a timely manner.

Following these tips will provide you an effective tool in order to establish a stable foundation to reach your goals and put you on the path to success. No matter what, understand you’ll endure both good and bad moments, use them both to help you grow and to stay consistent.

One additional tip I’d like to add is don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many people find shame in reaching out to other people but don’t realize the brightest and most successful minds have accomplished their goals with the help of other people.
